Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are highly sensitive and highly accurate. A COVID-19 PCR test detects genetic material, called RNA, from the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). A specimen sample is collected from the nose or mouth and is then sent to a lab for processing. On average, test results are available within 24-72 hours.
